Ultrasonic flow monitoring of water mains can be helpful for catching catastrophic leaks. The OmniSense S-26 wireless ultrasonic flow meter is purpose built for monitoring water pipes during construction. It periodically reports the current flow rate, the total flow today, and the total flow since it was last reset. The data is sent wirelessly to a OmniSense Gateway which sends it over a cellular internet connection to our monitoring server.
The server receives the data, stores it in the database and compares it to alarm rules. You can create as many alarm rules as needed. A typical alarm rule might be "alert me if flow exceeds 5 gallons per minute for more than 10 minutes between the hours of 4 PM and 6 AM monday through friday." There might be a second rule that says "alert me if flow exceeds 5 gallons per minute for more than 10 minutes 24 hours a day on Saturdays and Sundays". The two rules combined would cover "unusual flows" during non-working hours. Then there might be a 3rd rule that says "alert me if flow exceeds 30 gallons per minute for more than 10 minutes between the hours of 6AM and 4 PM mon-fri" which would cover unusual flows during working hours.
Ultrasonic flow meter installation is well documented in this video.
